Meet RISO’s February Artist of the Month

What is your name and the name of your organization/location?

Jessica Hoffman and Justin Quinlan, Paper Press Punch

How long have you been in the art industry?

We both went to art school in the late 90s/early 2000s. Jessica studied photography at The Corcoran College of Art and Justin studied painting at Maryland Institute College of Art. When we met in Philly in 2006, we almost immediately started collaborating on art projects. Most of those projects took the form of zines and screen prints. We tabled at our first comic fest together in 2009 at SPX and have been hooked on the zine/comic/self-publishing scene ever since!

How long have you been using RISO duplicators and the method of RISOGRAPHY?

We got our first RISO, a GR2710, in 2015 from a friend of a friend. We heard about Risograph Printing when we tabled at Short Run Comix and Arts Fest in Seattle in 2014, which sent us on a mission to acquire our own. We officially opened our riso studio in 2015 (we’re celebrating 10 years September 2025!) and began our public programming, including workshops and print for hire, in 2016. Our studio has since been home to 11 RISO duplicators of various models over the years.

What are some of your favorite colors to use with a duplicator?

Jessica: Fluorescent orange, Burgundy, Cornflower
Justin: Light Lime, Burgundy

Why RISOGRAPHY?

For us, Risography is more than just a printing process—it’s a vibrant, hands-on, and community-driven approach to making and sharing art. The affordability of Riso means that self-publishers, artists, and community organizers can distribute their art and messages widely and our community studio structure helps foster that connection. Risography gives you the power to reproduce and distribute work in a way that is accessible, environmentally conscious, and deeply connected to the DIY ethos. At our studio, we teach a variety of workshops for all ages and the joy of witnessing folks print their artwork on the Riso for the first time is truly magical. The unpredictability of ink coverage, misregistration, and unique textures create prints with a tactile, handmade quality that other means of printing can’t replicate.

What would you tell people who are just finding out about RISO Duplicators and the art form of RISOGRAPHY?

Find a local RISO studio and visit! Take a workshop! Go to a zine fest and buy books and prints directly from artists working with Riso! The Riso community is wonderfully supportive.
